bx_subsynth subharmonic: bass processing by Plugin Alliance

Press News
Plugin Alliance announces availability of bx_subsynth subharmonic bass processing plugin

“A lot of guys know how to take a record and make it an ‘A’ record, sitting in front of a computer using plugins, but there are a very small group of people who are able to make ‘A+’ records. The hardest part is the last 5% of the mix — that’s when those great records are made, and this plugin is one of those plugins that takes it from a 95 to a 100.”

- Dave Audé, Producer/Remixer/DJ (Mark Ronson, Beyoncé, Sting)
Plugin Alliance, a new ‘Über-standard’ supporting all major plugin formats and uniting some of the best-known international audio companies under one virtual roof, is proud to announce availability of bx_subsynth — a unique processing plugin built around the digital heart and soul of the (discontinued) dbx 120XP Subharmonic Synthesizer, using founding Plugin Alliance development partner Brainworx’s M/S (Mid-Side) matrix technology to control the stereo field and add sub, punch, and saturation to sounds.

Inspired by its superior subharmonic synthesis, Brainworx began by making a meticulous model of the legendary dbx 120XP Subharmonic Synthesizer’s Waveform ModelingTM engine, which generates discrete bass frequencies one octave below whatever is fed into it. Indeed, this was the secret weapon of many DJs, audio post professionals, and mix engineers for adding clean and powerful low end to sounds while shaking anything and everything within earshot. But far from simply seeking to emulate what had gone before, Brainworx took to supersizing the feature set of the original processor from which it took that inspiration by implementing a whole host of fanciful features to take things even higher — or, better said, lower! The result? Tighter, clearer, bigger, and resonant sounding bass can be synthesized from even the most meagre of sounds, such is the unprecedented level of power brought by bx_subsynth.

So how, exactly, does bx_subsynth do what it does and, more to the point, why does it do it so well? For starters, bx_subsynth generates subharmonics in up to three discrete frequency bands verses the original hardware’s two; the addition of a higher (56-80 Hz) Synthesized Frequency bass band for resynthesis — searching for the dominant frequency in the range of approximately 112-160Hz to synthesize a sub- octave from it — allows anyone to capture and nosedive the fundamental frequencies of a much wider variety of instruments, including snare drum and acoustic guitar. The Tight Punch control — a 6th-order resonant Butterworth high-pass filter at the input that can be used with or without the subharmonics summed in — creates crystal-clear, body-thumping bass by adding a resonant sub-bass peak and filtering out unwanted lows below its cutoff frequency. Powerful Edge processing permits selecting from two modes of operation — Smooth and Harsh — that compress and saturate tracks to deliver super-compact or explosively-trashy drums and throbbing, in-your-face bass guitar. Get this, though... being a Brainworx-branded plugin, bx_subsynth is truly the surgeon’s knife of stereo imaging, of course — choose to process only the mid channel or both left and right channels, collapse the processed bass to super-tight mono, and stretch the stereo image for mile-wide mixing!
bx_subsynth in action in this tantalising trailer:
But bass EQ cannot do what bx_subsynth does. Discrete frequencies generated by bx_subsynth set aside more space across the bass frequency band for other instruments, so sub-synth bass can be jacked up without muddying mixes. Moreover, EQs cannot boost bass in a thin track that is lacking in bottom end to start with, whereas bx_subsynth does not just boost bass, but also adds new bottom end! Unlike psychoacoustic bass processors that trick the human brain into hearing ‘phantom’ subharmonics that are non-existent and cannot be physically felt, bx_subsynth adds real sub-bass that will shake your body — Boom! shake-shake-shake the room-style!

Seriously, bx_subsynth is a serious tool that can be applied to almost anything... retune drum tracks by dialling in higher subharmonics for rack toms and lower ones for the floor tom to create colossal, pounding drum fills; boost different subharmonics on a kick drum and bass guitar to separate their respective sounds in the mix for increased clarity and punch; add subterranean thunder to sustained left-hand octaves on piano tracks; automatically generate a perfectly synchronised bass line from the bottom strings played on an arpeggiated acoustic guitar track — two knob twists are all it takes to focus the bass line’s image dead-centre and massively widen the guitar’s stereo image by up to 400%!
Remastering engineers can use bx_subsynth to add a fat bottom end to thin vinyl masters and old recordings made on narrow-gauge multitrack tape recorders. Sound designers can pump up weak cinematic effects with terrifying lows. DJs can turbocharge their sound systems’ low end to woofer-shattering extremes. Whatever the application, this is one helluva bone-rattling big bottom end that can be felt as well as heard!
Here it is, then... as an indispensable tool that can totally transform the way that low-end sound is designed and processed, bx_subsynth is the Holy Grail for bass junkies. Just ask Dave Audé!

TNT Voice Executor by Audified, Audio plugin to mix vocals or spoken word very quickly.

Audified announces availability of one-click processing plug-in for vocals and spoken word
“In some situations you have to mix vocals or spoken word very quickly — typically in broadcast operations or video productions. We couldn’t find any plug-in that suited this purpose perfectly, so I had to write one myself.”
- TNT Recording and Postproduction Studios owner Tomáš Trkal, 2017

Host application and audio effects developer Audified is proud to announce availability of TNT Voice Executor — a unique utilitarian plug-in offering no-nonsense processing of vocal and spoken word tracks to sophisticatedly solve any issues instantaneously.

By their very nature, human voices are complex mechanisms; marvellously, we can recognise individuals from their vocalisations — be that spoken word or otherwise. Obviously we all sound different, so it stands to reason, therefore, that when recording and broadcasting vocals or spoken word we need to treat them differently by appropriately applying effects to suit individual voices to get them sounding perfect. Problem is, though, that takes time and effort. And in today’s time-stressed production climate that’s a luxury many of us no longer enjoy — exactly the dilemma faced by TNT Recording and Postproduction Studios owner Tomáš Trkal. Unlike most mix engineers, however, as a software programmer he had the talent to do something about it. Well, wouldn’t you do something similar if what you wanted didn’t commercially exist? Enter TNT Voice Executor, a unique utilitarian plug-in named after that studio, offering no-nonsense processing of vocal and spoken word tracks to sophisticatedly solve any issues instantaneously.
While we all, ultimately, have Tomáš Trkal to thank for TNT Voice Executor, it’s timely arrival as Audified’s latest product took a little time and effort on its instigator’s part, of course. “Often clients want to have the final mix of a song right after recording, which is unrealistic in most cases, so I was in need of something that I could apply to recorded raw vocal tracks, set one parameter, bounce the song, and give it to the client within minutes,” he explains. “I programmed something suitable and started using it, but when I started studying software programming at Brno University of Technology my teacher put me in contact with Audified CEO Lubor Prikryl. When I demonstrated my plug-in for him, he was so impressed that Audified decided to release it for all major formats, adding some professional standard features, such as metering and calibration to move the product forward.”
TNT Voice Executor by Audified’s informative introductory video
Fortunately for the rest of us, thanks to this fortuitous meeting of minds, TNT Voice Executor effortlessly does what it says on the tin. No questions necessary. Needless to say, the finished product is unquestionably easy on the eye, yet there are actually multiple effect modules making this time-saving tool equally easy on the ear. EQ, DRIVE, and DELAY are all present and accounted for alongside complete dynamics controls. Continues its instigator: “The plug-in consists of eight processing modules — noise gate [GATE]; high-pass filter; compressor [COMP], with up to three active instances of compressor with different settings in one module; 4-band parametric [EQ]; distortion [DIST]; stereo image enhancer [STEREO]; DELAY; and limiter [LIMIT] — that I typically use when mixing vocals. I’ve treated those modules very carefully, preparing lots of super-usable presets in collaboration with Audified Sound Designer Jarek Musil to satisfy the user’s needs. In short, this plug-in is designed to get a great sound as quickly as possible.”
Put simply: getting a great sound with TNT Voice Executor couldn’t be simpler. Simply select a preset then use the three knobs to set the INPUT and OUTPUT volumes (using the I/O meters), tweak the DRIVE (effect) amount, and you’re good to go! Gathered into four groups, each preset contains several variants for both male and female voices. The right-side of the plug-in’s crystal-clear GUI (Graphical User Interface) simply shows which effects are engaged and how much gain is being reduced. Really, it’s as simple as that. No other controls are available (apart from some advanced calibration settings ‘hidden’ in the service menu).
Might you need TNT Voice Executor, then? The answer to that quick question is simple: if you’ve got a microphone and record vocals and/ or spoken word then you’ll find it invaluable. Applications include editing audio books, v-log posts, YouTube videos, podcasts, advertisement voiceovers, television trailers, newscasts... the list goes on. Put it this way: wherever the human voice sounds, TNT Voice Executor makes it sound better in next to no time with a no-nonsense approach to processing par excellence.
TNT Voice Executor is available to purchase as an iLok-protected plug-in — running as an AAX, VST3, and VST2 plug-in on Mac (OS X 10.9 - 10.12) and PC (Windows 7, 8, and 10) and AU on Mac — at an introductory price of $49.00 USD until March 19, 2017 (rising thereafter to $69.00 USD) from Audified’s online shop here: https://shop.audified.com/products/tnt-voice-executor
TNT Voice Executor is available to download directly from Audified from here: http://services.audified.com/download  - Please note that iLok dongle hardware is not needed for either the 30-day trial or full version of TNT Voice Executor — simply create a free account and install PACE Anti-Piracy’s iLok License Manager from here: https://www.ilok.com
About Audified (www.audified.com)

Audified is the premier brand of privately-owned Boskovice-based DISK Multimedia, s.r.o. in the Czech Republic, created to develop specialised audio applications, as well as handling the company’s high-end hardware product portfolio. Pioneering the development of audio applications for live (realtime) performance, as well as developing the first audio effects plug-ins for Apple’s Mac OS X, the company created some of the first plug-ins for Power|Core,TC Electronic’s hardware-accelerated DSP platform, prompting the Danish developer’s then-PR Manager Thomas Valter to comment, “Our two companies have been working closely together on various projects, and we are very satisfied with the products that have been a result of our cooperation.” Consequently, the company returned to its host application and audio effects developmental roots in 2007 by branding itself with the Audiffex appellation to resourcefully reflect that directional change with an award-winning array of innovations, including MixChecker — a must-have mixing assistant plug-in that transforms studio monitors into classic reference monitors or one of several consumer devices to instantly improve mixes. Moreover, Audified is not just a for-profit business, however; its parental company clearly cares about the future of audio software/hardware development, developing partnerships with both Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) in Brno, Czech Republic — realising a research project to bring modern audio engineering technologies to music education, and also Brno University of Technology, one of the Czech Republic’s leading research and teaching institutions — working with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication Technologies on scientific projects. In keeping with spreading the (audio engineering) word, Audified has helpfully seen fit to recently release a range of free plug-ins, available from here: http://shop.audified.com/collections/products/free#tags

Sound-splitting FISSION™ - revolutionary audio plugin by EVENTIDE

Eventide Enters New Plug-in Paradigm with Sound-splitting FISSION™ Featuring STRUCTURAL EFFECTS™
Recording technology trailblazer Eventide enters a new plug-in paradigm by proudly announcing availability of FISSION — the first product to feature its seminal STRUCTURAL EFFECTS method for cleanly and completely separating the transient and tonal components of a sound in a patent-pending approach which makes it practical to modify the individual components independently.
While traditional approaches are limited by their reliance on dynamics processing, Eventide’s proprietary STRUCTURAL EFFECTS method makes use of frequency-and-time-domain-sifting to, in effect, deconstruct a sound. FISSION features multi-effects for the transient and tonal sections enabling modifications from the subtle to the bizarre. It’s a new tool for working with classic effects like delay, EQ, and reverb; and a looper’s dream. It’s also a new tool for traditional, utilitarian uses.
A novel FOCUS control makes it possible for FISSION users to ‘guide’ the separation. And an ability to ‘solo’ and mix the deconstructed audio allows for forensic and subtle changes. Modify, delay, or remove the transient plucks of a guitar part without affecting the tone; retune a snare drum without touching the crisp transient; modify, delay, or remove the tonal component of a piano line for a more staccato sound — FISSION is more than a plug-in... it’s truly the first of its kind!
Eventide Managing Director Tony Agnello admits, “We named the main separation control FOCUS, because we didn’t know what else to call it. This may sound silly, but if you have a knob that does something really useful and you don’t know how to label it, it’s a clue that you may be onto something new.”
Says Eventide Senior DSP Engineer Russell Wedelich: “STRUCTURAL EFFECTS is a new approach for modifying sound. If you can imagine that any sound is a combination of tonal and transient components, our method can be thought of as sifting sound. We’ve developed a ‘sieve’ which cleanly separates the smooth gold (tonal) from the jagged sand (transients).” There’s more to come as the trailblazing company keeps pushing forward: “FISSION is the first member of a new class of processors. We plan to develop a family of products based on this new technique, so stay tuned!”
Watch Eventide’s informative introductory
FISSION and STRUCTURAL EFFECTS video

Try FISSION and enter a new paradigm of sound modification. Put it into play and discover what becomes possible once a sound is split into its transient and tonal components. Add effects: Six studio quality effects — Delay, Tap Delay, Dynamics, Phaser, Reverb, and Gate + EQ — are available for the transient component and seven — Delay, Compressor, EQ, Pitch, Chorus, Reverb, and Tremolo — for the tonal component. Tweak the split: Never before was it possible to split, modify, and reassemble any sound while fine-tuning the split. FISSION’s unique STRUCTURAL SPLIT controls — SMOOTHING, TRANS DECAY, SOURCE TYPE, and FOCUS — combined with a real-time waveform display that provides clear tracking of transient/tonal split allows the user to adjust the split to taste.
FISSION bundles an array of sound-splitting presets from world-class creative performance and recording artists (including Richard Devine, Chris Carter, Suzanne Ciani, Joe Chiccarelli, John Agnello, Stewart Lerman, Steve Rosenthal, Erin Tonkon, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith). Eventide is clearly on to something special with FISSION.

FISSION is available now (as an AU/AAX/VST plug-in for Mac OS 10.7+ and Windows 7/8) for 45 days at an introductory price of $97.00 USD — rising to an MSRP of $179.00 USD thereafter — from Eventide dealers and its website: https://www.eventideaudio.com

SynthMaster One, brand new software synth by KV331

KV331 Audio waves in intuitive wavetable synthesis era with SynthMaster One soft synth

High-quality virtual instrument provider KV331 Audio is proud to announce availability of SynthMaster One — an easy-to-use wavetable soft synth with an intuitive workflow available in AU and VST formats for Mac OS X and Windows.
SynthMaster One shares the same sound engine as its award-winning big brother, SynthMaster, but boosts it with wavetable synthesis features. Fortunately for fans of wavetable synthesis, SynthMaster One’s simple layout, rich wavetable content, and inspiring factory presets from a world-class crack team of sound designers — including Arksun, Bülent Biyikoglu, Gerçek Dorman, Ufuk Kevser, Rob Lee, Vorpal Sound, Xenos Soundworks, and Aiyn Zahev — makes designing distinctive sounds simplicity itself.
In implementing true wavetable synthesis, SynthMaster One opens up new possibilities for sound design. Unlike SynthMaster, where only up to 16 waveforms can be sequenced to create a wavetable, SynthMaster One can read files that contain wavetables in them. SynthMaster One comes complete with a rich wavetable library that can be extended by placing wavetables in its Waveforms folder. Furthermore, each of its two oscillators feature 17 different algorithms controlled by TONE and PHASE parameters to shape the oscillator wavetable.
With its semi-modular architecture, there’s so much more to the easy-to-use SynthMaster One than might first meet the eye, however. For each instance of SynthMaster One, there are two oscillators (OSC 1 and OSC 2) each with sub- oscillators (SUB 1 and SUB 2), two filters (FILTER 1 and FILTER 2), four ADSR envelopes (MOD ENV 1, AMP ENV 1, AMP ENV 2, and MOD ENV 2), two LFOs (LFO 1 and LFO 2), a powerful 16-step arpeggiator/sequencer (each step of which has its own Velocity, Note Number, Note Length, Slide, and Hold parameters, as well as classic and more complex modes), and also 11 different effect types — Distortion, LoFi, Ensemble, Phaser, 6 Band EQ, Compressor, Vocoder, Delay, Chorus, Tremolo, and Reverb — that can be inserted into six different slots.
KV331 Audio’s introductory series of SynthMaster One videos:
SynthMaster One’s oscillators have stereo outputs and are capable of up to 16 UNISON voices. By using the VOICES, VOICES MIX, DETUNE CURVE, DETUNE SPREAD, PAN SPREAD, TONE SPREAD, PHASE SPREAD, and WAVE INDEX SPREAD parameters, each oscillator can generate a rich ‘supersaw’ sound. Still deeper, each sub-oscillator can be connected to its associated oscillator in five different modes, meaning users can choose to use them as regular sub-oscillators or have them do complex modulations, such as ring modulation, amplitude modulation, phase modulation, or frequency modulation. The sub-oscillators can also synthesize different types of noise.
SynthMaster One offers four different categories for each of its filters — namely, ladder, diode ladder, state variable, and bite, and all filter algorithms are created using zero-delay feedback filter technology. The filters can sound very warm, with advanced filter parameters like INPUT GAIN, DRIVE, and ACID.
Aside from 12 preconfigured modulation matrix entries to make sound design even easier, new modulations can quickly be created by simply dragging a source or destination onto any knob on the user interface. Up to 24 modulation matrix entries can be created using 24 modulation sources and 234 destinations.
Whether revisiting the glory days of wavetable synthesis or taking it kicking and screaming into the future, SynthMaster One has what it takes to win many musical admirers — and even supports Scala tuning in doing so! Easy to use and easy on the pocket, why not wave in intuitive wavetable synthesis with a little help from your friends at KV331 Audio?
SynthMaster One is available in 64-bit AU and VST formats for online purchase directly from KV331 Audio for $79.00 USD at: http://www.synthmaster.com/synthmasterone.aspx (Existing SynthMaster owners can crossgrade for $29.00 USD.)

Spitfire Audio's LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS for Kontakt. A masterpiece.

 Press News

Spitfire Audio aligns with London Contemporary Orchestra to create cutting-edge strings library like no other
LONDON, UK: Spitfire Audio, purveyors of the finest virtual instruments from the finest musical samples in the world, is proud to announce availability of LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS — serving up everything needed to make cutting-edge strings music on a beautifully prepared platter, perfectly produced in partnership with the London Contemporary Orchestra, whose work with the likes of Radiohead and Jed Kurzel (Alien: Covenant) has contributed significantly to a shift in string writing, with rich recordings of violin, viola, cello, and bass sections resulting in a host of dynamically-controllable, never-before-sampled articulations that are as playable and musical as they are transformational.
Always a company keen to keep its collective ear to the ground and never one to rest on its collective laurels, Spitfire Audio noted a shift in string writing based on innovative techniques and performance styles becoming a global movement. Most certainly that was the case, but it was also nigh on impossible to program with the tools (then) currently available. As a distinct collection of multi-sampled, multi-dynamic, and, most importantly, ‘playable’ strings, LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS sets out to change that. “This is an innovative and experimental library,” says Spitfire Audio co-founder — and composer for films, television, and video games — Paul Thomson. “It has a load of really unique articulations that you literally won’t find anywhere else — articulations that have been workshopped by the London Contemporary Orchestra during work that they’ve done with artists like Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood, and from their work on the latest Alien film, Alien: Covenant. This library ranges from raw, in-your-face sounds, and can add real excitement, emotion, and interest to existing string libraries that you’re using. Also, it can stand on its own as an incredibly diverse and exciting library to work with.”
What a wonderful introduction from a wonderfully talented individual. But how this meeting of musical minds came to fruition makes for fitting and equally engaging reading. Winner of the Ensemble category at the RPS (Royal Philharmonic Society) Music Awards — the highest recognition for live classical music-making in the UK — in 2015, the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO) has established itself as one of the UK’s most innovative and respected ensembles, promoting the best new music and cross-arts collaborations to an ever-widening audience. As such, it has collaborated with a distinguished array of composers, artists, and brands, including Radiohead, Secret Cinema, Actress, Vivienne Westwood, Jonny Greenwood, members of Arcade Fire, Boiler Room, Goldfrapp, Nike, Terry Riley, Beck, and Foals. LCO strings and choir feature prominently on Radiohead’s 2016 album A Moon Shaped Pool; soundtrack output features on The Master, Theeb, Slow West, and Macbeth; while, closer to their namesake home, highlights include sold-out performances at the Roundhouse, Southbank Centre, the Barbican, and now... working with Spitfire Audio, recording at the company’s London-based dry stage to create LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS

Spitfire Audio co-founder and Director Paul Thomson’s
LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS video walkthrough
Like all good things that are worth waiting for, this musical match made in heaven was far from being a rushed affair. According to Spitfire Audio, LCO members became interested in collaborating when the company started experimenting with its EVO GRID line of virtual instruments based around hyper-long, sample-based articulations that evolve over time, organised on a grid so users can plot which evolution or ‘evo’ sits on which key range, resulting in a GUI (Graphical User Interface) inspired by the breakthrough British EMS VCS3, which made musical history upon its introduction in 1969 by being the first commercially portable synthesiser available anywhere in the world, thanks to its innovative modular matrix-based patchboard dispensing with the telephone exchange-like cabling of other (much larger) modular systems in favour of making space-saving connections with (removable) coloured pins.
Passing time, the two award-winning companies met over a period of two years, discussing how to make a virtual strings library like no other. Only by working with the LCO could that be achieved. And the rest, as they say, is history.

LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS
LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS sees Spitfire Audio Head of Product Stanley Gabriel and in-demand engineer Joe Rubel teaming up with the LCO to recreate its popular ‘workshop’ playing approach to curate a musical, deeply versatile set of never-before-sampled articulations that, at long last, gives users an ability to demo and create cutting-edge string writing — the kind of work that is winning hot new composers plaudits across the compositional landscape. Leaning from sharply angular to sincere beauty, LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS reflects encouraging the LCO to create the ‘impossible’ by recording detuned strings to form playable single instruments, resulting in another must-have library comprising six Violins, four Violas, three Celli and two Basses + Celli in octaves with over 100 articulations captured across all sections — each with two mic positions (Close and Room), two individual stereo mixes (Full and Pumped), two additional printed analogue effects, and integrated reverb (matched to the room with GUI control).

Creating LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS allowed Spitfire Audio to achieve two things: capture the unique techniques and styling of an extremely exciting group of musicians for use in its own compositions and create new instruments with them that could only be possible by harnessing the power of modern sampling technology. These upfront strings are designed to make anyone who uses them think differently about string writing. “What you have here, in my opinion, is an innovative and really unique sound — very playable and musical,” maintains Paul Thomson. “This will give you stuff that you just simply can’t do with any other strings library. It’s really useful — on its own to create these beautiful, intense and searing kind of sounds that you’ll associate with the scores of Jonny Greenwood, for example, but also to use as a blending tool to give you your own sound on another strings library. You can overlay these sounds and just kind of feather them in to get that kind of thing where your ear can pick out that there’s something really interesting and unique going on, but you can’t quite work out what it is. It really is a new and useful tool for the composer and producer’s arsenal.”

LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA STRINGS can be purchased and digitally downloaded (as 45.7 GB of uncompressed .WAV files, featuring 42,094 samples) for a time-limited introductory promo price of £239.00 GBP (inc. VAT)/$279.00 USD/€289.00 EUR (inc. VAT) until 08:00 GMT on March 9, 2017 — rising thereafter to an RRP of £299.00 GBP (inc. VAT)/$349.00 USD/€359.00 EUR (inc. VAT) — from here: http://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/instruments/orchestra/london-contemporary-orchestra-strings/
